Cumulonimbus-tav

Project code: PN-II-PT-PCCA-2013-4-2074 , Contract: 144-01/07/2014

Hail events represent an important natural disaster associated with great economic losses especially in agriculture. Anti-hail rockets program is based on dispersing pyrotechnical mixtures of silver-iodide (clouds seeding). The mixture act as condensation nuclei, creating a large number of small hail particles which melt and fall in form of drops. Nevertheless, it is extremely difficult to validate the effect of the seeding, due to superposition of strong natural atmospheric variations.

Overview

LIRA – The combined use of LIdar and RAdar for assessing phenomena associated seeding clouds to prevent the hail – aims to investigate cloud transformations as consequence of seeding, and determine best operational procedures to enhance efficiency and reduce side effects in case of hail suppression, using a smart combination of remote sensing techniques (passive and active): lidar, radar, microwave radiometry, satellite imagery.
